Vintage 329′s Summer Reading Kickoff

Last night I was invited to photograph the Summer Reading Kickoff Party  for the Friends of the New Orleans Public Library hosted by Royal Street gallery Vintage 329.  The fine folks from Hotel Monteleone provided refreshments and were on hand to showcase their own original literary works.   Writer Lolis Eric Elie was on hand to welcome everyone to the event.  Several of New Orleans’s finest actors read aloud from signed first editions of iconic American classics by Dr. Seuss, Harper Lee, and Robert Frost.  Big Choo and the Game Ova Boyz closed out the evening with a music and dance performance designed to get the message out to children that “reading is cool!”  As I drank my delicious raspberry spritzer and listened to selections from To Kill A Mockingbird, surrounded by historical iconography and one-of-a-kind pop culture memorabilia, I was distinctly aware of being present for a uniquely New Orleans event.  Our city has a wonderful way of combining the arts with a good party for a great cause, and it was a special evening for all who attended.  20 % of proceeds from rare book sales at last night’s event went to the Friends of the New Orleans Public Library, and Vintage 329 is donating 10% of  rare book sales through July 31st to the FNOPL, so you still have time to visit the gallery and check out some incredible books.  While you are at it, bring a few books from your own collection at home, because Vintage 329 is serving as a depository for the book donation arm of the FNOPL.   Click here to learn more about the program.

French Quarter Engagement Photography

Natasha and Jason aren’t from New Orleans, they aren’t getting married in New Orleans, and Jason’s proposal did not happen in New Orleans.  But this dashing couple has lived here for the past two years, and they wanted our beautiful city to be the backdrop for their engagement pictures.  We started in the Mona Lisa Pizza/Golden Lantern part of the French Quarter, and then headed over to Cafe Du Monde on Jason’s fabulous motorcycle.  I am super happy with the pictures!

Here are my favorites in album-layout form.

Meschiya Lake- Big Easy Award’s Best Female Performer of the Year!

The 2011 Big Easy Music Awards were held last night at Harrah’s Casino.  An artist close to my heart, the fabulous Meschiya Lake, won Best Female Performer of the Year.   The award is well deserved, and I feel so lucky to have had the pleasure of photographing Meschiya Lake last year for the cover of her debut album, Lucky Devil, and again recently with her entire band.  Here’s the album cover from last year’s shoot, which references the classic Bellocq Storyville image:

And here is the picture that was selected from our recent shoot as the favorite:

New Orleans Wedding Photography- Aubudon Zoo Ceremony, Aubudon Tea Room Reception

I’ve had a great time getting to know Jenna and Jeremy this past year as I photographed their engagement and bridal sessions.  These two fun-loving dentists work hard, play hard, and throw one amazing party.  Here’s a picture that sums them up quite nicely, I think.

Candid moments from the wedding day- Jenna at the beginning, Jeremy just as they are about to leave the reception. These two are made for each other.

We began the day with bride and groom prep at the Bourbon Orleans hotel, took a few quick pictures in the French Quarter, and then headed uptown.  Their evening ceremony took place on the steps of the sea lion exhibit at the Audubon Zoo, and they danced the night away with friends in their Audubon Tea Room reception.  What a fun day.  What a cool job.  I love being a wedding photographer.

Cool Jazz People On A Hot Day

This morning I had the pleasure of photographing some folks from the NOLA Jitterbugs Crew.  They are organizing a camp that will feature a week of jazz music and dancing instruction, and I took this photograph to get their promotion extravaganza started.

French Quarter and Faubourg Marigny Engagement Photography

This engagement session was a blast!  We picked up Dallas residents Kelly and Mike from the Chateau Bourbon hotel and headed towards the  Faubourg Marigny for some fun engagement pictures.  We stopped for a quick shot in the lower  Quarter, and then headed down to Washington Park and Frenchmen Street to take advantage of some of our many local colors.  A quick Abita Beer break at Checkpoint Charlie’s provided a relaxing interlude and a cute shot.   After an outfit change, it was off to the Moonwalk on the Mississippi River for the sunset and the sailing of the steamboat Natchez.  Kelly and Mike were fun and fabulous, and I really look forward to their July wedding at Rosy’s Jazz Hall.

Popp Fountain Engagement Photography- City Park, New Orleans

Last Friday was absolutely gorgeous, and I headed out to City Park with Katelyn and Brian for some fun engagement portraits.  We started off at Popp Fountain, then headed to a secluded area of City Park, and finally finished the shoot on the lakefront.  I’m really happy with the pictures, and I look forward to their June wedding!

French Quarter Engagement Photography

New Orleans is a magical city steeped in romance and culture, and naturally it’s a perfect location for a destination wedding.  Annie and Robby live in Nashville, but have chosen New Orleans as the location for their November wedding.  So right away we know they are awesome and have exceptional taste.  They recently came to town for Mardi Gras, and we dodged the revelers for a quick engagement session.  This adorable couple kept me laughing the entire shoot, and I can’t wait to join them on their wedding day.

City Park Bridal Portraits

Wedding photographers in New Orleans are never at a loss for fabulous locations.  Nancy and Adam chose romantic City Park for their bridal portraits, which are done with both the bride and the groom in the Vietnamese tradition.  I’m finishing up the edits on their wedding pictures now, but in the meantime- check out this gorgeous bride and groom!  We started off at the New Orleans Museum of Art in the sculpture garden, and then headed over to the lagoon to spend some quality time with the old oaks.
